PERIPREM

PERIPrem (Perinatal Excellence to Reduce Injury in Premature Birth) is a new perinatal care bundle to improve the outcomes for premature babies across the West and South West regions. The bundle consists of a number of interventions that demonstrate significant impact on brain injury and mortality rates amongst babies born prematurely.

All 12 units in the South West have been working on PERIPrem since August 2020.

The first few months of the programme have already seen increasing uptake in many elements of the care bundle across the SW.  This success is particularly clear in the area of deferred cord clamping.  All units have been working on this intervention, but particular credit should go to the SCU teams in Yeovil, Barnstaple and Torbay, who have quickly developed a really strong perinatal team culture, which is vital for successful implementation of DCC.

There’s also been impressive progress in normothermia and early breast milk, especially with the recent release of the BAPM MBM toolkit
