Torbay Special Care Baby Unit

Torbay Special Care Baby Unit

Torbay SCBU is a level 1 unit with a total of 10 cots, eight are for Special Care and two are for High Dependency Care. We take babies born from 30 weeks gestation (32 weeks if twins) and weighing approximately 1.3Kg. We are able to offer Nasal CPAP, Biphasic NCPAP and have recently introduced Optiflow onto SCBU. For babies born at less than 30 weeks gestation, or for babies requiring Intensive Care we have facilities for stabilisation before being transferred out by a specialist neonatal transport team.

The unit is staffed by a team of experienced Doctors, Nurses, Nursery Nurses and Health Care Assistants. There are a minimum of three nurses on each shift both day and night. A Consultant Paediatrician visits SCBU daily with the medical care being headed by a lead Consultant for SCBU.

For parents we have a four bedded bay where mothers can be resident with their babies. We also provide a small sitting room equipped with TV, toys for siblings and a range of parent information. Resident mums are provided with three meals a day. All parents with a baby on SCBU are provided with a free car parking permit.

We try to minimise the effects of a stressful environment for the babies on SCBU by using incubator covers to dim out light, offering skin to skin care with dedicated reclining chairs and promoting ‘quiet time’ on a daily basis.
